Overview
The combined use of music and psychedelic substances predates Western medicine, with roots in Indigenous cultural practices. Yet with the rise of psychedelic therapy in the West, practitioners are left with questions regarding the function of music and how to guide patients with music effectively in clinical settings.

Who this course is for

Designed as an introduction to music for/as psychedelic therapy, this workshop series is created for:

    • ketamine practitioners and clinics,
    • psychedelic therapists, and psychedelic therapy students
    • any mental health practitioners who are looking to work with music in their practice.  

Equipment needed

Session 3 includes an experiential deep listening component that requires:

    • Your best headphones or external sound system
    • An eye mask to support full immersion in the music
    • A jumper or blanket to hand for warmth and comfort

About your instructor

Mendel Kaelen is the founder and CEO of Wavepaths, a startup providing music both for and as psychedelic therapy. Prior to this, he worked as a PhD and postdoctoral neuroscientist at Imperial College London since 2012, where his research was the first to demonstrate music’s central role in psychedelic therapies. He is a thought leader on the therapeutic use of music and publishes and speaks frequently on this topic.

In this interactive and experiential session, you’ll be exploring research highlighting the importance of personalising music to support improvements in mental health and wellbeing. You will learn about how listeners experience Wavepaths music, what effect the music is having in different contexts for treatment, and whether the data support our fundamental hypothesis that resonance with music yields therapeutic benefits.

    • Why it is important to focus on getting the music right in psychedelic-assisted and deep listening therapies
    • Whether the emotions and levels of intensity that a therapist chooses for a listener are experienced as intended

About your instructor

Bradley Vines is the Chief Science Officer of Wavepaths, a startup providing music both for and as psychedelic therapy. Prior to this, he spent seven years working as a Director of Consumer Neuroscience, conducting research on the effects of music on cognition and behaviour. Bradley obtained his PhD in Experimental Psychology at McGill University, focusing on music and emotion. He completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Harvard Medical School, Department of Neurology, and was a postdoctoral scholar at the University of California Center for Mind and Brain. He also holds a MBA from University of Oxford.

About your instructor

Tom Shutte is the Clinical Lead at Wavepaths. He trained in Humanistic and Transpersonal approaches to psychotherapy and has worked as a therapist and group facilitator since qualifying in 2009. He was one of the first therapists to join the Wavepaths team, and continues to create, run and guide deep listening sessions each week.

Valentina Olper is a Guide at Wavepaths. She initially trained as a psychoanalytic psychotherapist and has been practising in the NHS and privately for over six years. Her therapeutic style is creative and she considers the importance of finding balance in the emotional, spiritual and physical realms. In her work she focuses on promoting a sense of safety, connection, hope and providing a gentle reminder of the intrinsic power to heal.
